Plastering

Plastering Apprenticeships normally last for 2 years during which time you will attend the NWTC training centre on a day release or full time course to obtain your Key Skills, Health & Safety and diploma. If you are employed the remainder of the time will be spent with your employer, following the National Vocational Qualification (N.V.Q) Level 2 laid down by the Construction Industry Training Board (C.I.T.B) and the City & Guilds, leading to a certificate of apprenticeship.

Training Programme

Students will gain experience and knowledge in the following Plastering skills:

  • Health & Safety
  • Mixing the plaster
  • Measurement of quantities
  • Applying materials to backgrounds

Preparation of walls to include

  • Hacking away old plaster
  • Patching up browning, bonding and finishing plaster
  • External rendering

Plastering around

  • Door frames
  • Light switches
  • Preparation of brickwork render
  • Use of a range of coating
  • Use of additives

Plastering to include

  • Walls
  • Ceilings
  • Use of browning plaster
  • Use of finishing plaster

During the apprenticeship the company, which employs you, would normally pay you a percentage of the skilled persons rate for each year of training.

Recruitment period

January to August.  Most apprenticeships commence in September of each year.

Selection Test

  • You will first attend a selection test at NWTC
  • You should have or hope to gain Grade D or above in Maths, English, Science and a Technical subject.

Preliminary Interview

  • If you obtain good results in the NWTC Selection Test you will be invited to attend Interview with one of our Training Officers 
  • Some evidence of practical ability and an interest in Plastering would be useful.

Company Interviews

  • Company Interviews are then arranged for the most suitable applicants
  • Applicants chosen for employment by the company will normally start in September.
