Advanced Plumbing, Heating & Mechanical Services

Advanced Plumbing, Heating & Mechanical Apprenticeships normally last for 3 to 4 years during which time you will attend the NWTC training centre on a day release course to obtain your Key Skills, Health & Safety and diploma. The remainder of the time will be spent with your employer, following the National Vocational Qualification (N.V.Q) Level 3 laid down by the Construction Industry Training Board (C.I.T.B) and the City & Guilds, leading to a certificate of advanced apprenticeship.  A level 2 NVQ is a requirement to enrole on this course.

Training Programme

Plumbing, Heating & Ventilation

Working mainly on site installing and maintaining various types of Plumbing or heating and ventilating systems, both domestic and industrial.

Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning

Working mainly on site installing and maintaining various types of Air-Conditioning or refrigeration systems.

It involves reading drawings, measuring and marking out, using the tools and equipment for installation and maintenance of Air-Conditioning and refrigeration systems.

During the apprenticeship the company, which employs you, would normally pay you a percentage of the skilled persons rate for each year of training.

Recruitment period

January to August.  Most apprenticeships commence in September of each year.

Selection Test

  • You will first attend a selection test at NWTC
  • You should have or hope to gain Grade C or above in Maths, English, Science and a Technical subject.

Preliminary Interview

  • If you obtain good results in the NWTC Selection Test you will be invited to attend Interview with one of our Training Officers 
  • Some evidence of practical ability and an interest in Plumbing, Heating and Mechanical Services
    would be useful.

Company Interviews

  • Company Interviews are then arranged for the most suitable applicants
  • Applicants chosen for employment by the company will normally start in September.
